Auriol Road is a project in West Kensington, London, that proposes replacing a bland post war block with a new residential terrace of 24 homes comprised of virtual town houses and lateral apartments above.
The scheme has received planning approval, following in-depth consultation with local residents and ward councillors. Encouraged by consultees to explore ways of strengthening the proposals connection with the local heritage, KC+A introduced a reference to the site’s original use as an orchard. The names of forgotten early Victorian apple varieties are carved in a continuous ribbon of copper plate font into the head of the buildings’ stone base.
The project’s contemporary design is based upon a thorough study of the local urban fabric and seeks to reinforce the character, urban grain and rhythm of the neighbourhood, whilst at the same time adding something with a fresh, new identity.
